Normally we use indices to track how investments are doing. However, I recently found an index which tracks the United State’s recovery from the COVID crash. Moody’s Analytics and CNN Business created a “Back To Normal” index and you can monitor it on their Back to Normal Index webpage.
I appreciate that this index combines several elements from disparate universes – investments, economic output, housing, savings, employment, and household activity – to get a sense of how far from “normal” we’ve gotten. However, what I really applaud is the transparency on their site for each of the underlying components of the index and how they’ve moved over time. It all works in tandem to provide a lot of insightful datapoints about which states, which industries, and which elements of our economy are thriving, floundering, back to normal, or still locked in stasis. We’ll be sure to include elements of this index in our future quarterly reviews.
